About my little accounting business

Occasionally I’ll help a small business with their accounting related needs. Sometimes before a business hires me they want to see some sort of resume or proof that I’m not a robot. So I created this page to send them.

^Fancy logo for BRD Accounting. That's (B)ryan (R)ichard (D)uffett. You're god damn right.

**IMPORTANT - My small business accounting philosophy:

If you have less than 5 employees you (the business owner) should be doing your own accounting. This also applies to low profit-margin places like small retail and coffee shops. Accounting/bookkeeping should be looked at as an essential skill any successful entrepreneur has, not something you pay money for. If you do not have this skill I can probably teach you.

If you have greater than 5 employees one of those employees should be someone with accounting/bookkeeping powers. They are part of your payroll and keep you organized and on track. Their service is integral to the successful operation of your business and their cost is included as part of your annual budget.

It is my experience that good, affordable accountants and bookkeepers are hard to find. That is because good ones cost more than most small businesses are willing to pay. So, people cheap out - understandably - and their finances end up in a mess. The business suffers greatly from this level of financial disorganization. Therefore, when hiring someone to look after your books; take your time, and screen them well.

A quick note on TAXES

Most people incorrectly assume that because I am an accountant I am good at taxes. This is false. Taxes are boring for me, too. I do my own individual taxes, but I generally stay away from other people’s taxes on purpose because I don’t enjoy doing them. If you are looking for someone to do your taxes, kindly move along.

My taxes philosophy

Individuals should do their own taxes using an online program like Turbo Tax. Don’t pay someone else to do them - do them yourself. Over the last 10-15 years technology has made this process super-simple. Take advantage.

Businesses should consult an accounting firm or tax specialist (of which I most certainly am not) for tax matters and advice.

My credentials, in reverse-chronological order

2017 - QuickBooks Online “Pro Advisor” certification (I’m good at Quickbooks)

2014 - CPA designation awarded, Certified Professional Accountants of Canada (no big deal)

2010 - Bachelor of Business Administration, BBA, Memorial University of Newfoundland (meh - wouldn’t recommend it)

2008 - Business Management Diploma - Accounting focus, College of the North Atlantic, St. John’s, NL (Community college is: 1) a laugh, and 2) good for developing skills that make you “employable”. I’m glad I went)

2005 - High School Diploma, Discovery Collegiate, Bonavista, NL (hahaha)

My rate:

It depends. I’ve charged anywhere from $0/hr to $100/hr depending on the situation. It doesn’t have to be hourly either, but that is what most people are used to. We can talk about this.
